About Us
Welcome to Roanoke County Professional Fire Fighters and Paramedics website. The Roanoke County Professional Fire Fighters & Paramedics was established in 1988. Our membership consists of over 110 Roanoke County Fire and Rescue career fire fighters and paramedics.
Our Local is associated with the International Association of Fire Fighters which represents more than 267,000 professional firefighters and emergency medical personnel in the United States and Canada. IAFF members protect more than 85 percent of the lives and property and are the largest providers of pre-hospital emergency medical care in the U.S.
The IAFF has been the leading force behind numerous advances for the fire and emergency services, including:
· Passing heart, lung and other disability laws to protect fire fighters who become ill from on-the-job hazards
· Enacting federal benefits for the survivors of fire fighters killed or totally disabled in the line of duty
· Establishing progressive civil service laws in the U.S. and Canada
· Enhancing public safety through national standards ensuring professionalism and high standards of training and education for fire and emergency personnel
· Establishing training programs for hazardous materials emergencies
· Establishing minimum staffing requirements for fire fighting
We are also part of the Virginia Professional Fire Fighters which represents over 52 departments in the Commonwealth of Virginia. VPFF members provide fire protection and emergency medical services to over 70% of Virginia’s population.
The VPFF has been the leading force in Virginia protecting our benefits, including:
· Cancer presumption Legislation
· Protection of existing heart-lung presumption legislation
· Increasing penalties for assaulting a fire fighter or paramedic
· Increased Virginia Public Safety Officer Benefit
· Protection or our current retirement benefits and trying to better them
For 20 years our local has been on the front line working to improve the wages, benefits and working conditions for our members. It is our goal not only to improve in these areas for members while employed with Roanoke County, but to ensure the conditions they enjoy will benefit the members and their families long into their retirement.
